Condemning the Tiki Torch Hate March in Charlottesville and Why This is Still Important

Good People on Both Sides

We must reject the notion that there are "good people on both sides" of a hate rally. It is our responsibility to denounce hate and hold those accountable who promote it.

The Dog Whistle that Followed

Good People Both Sides
A dog whistle is a term used in politics to describe coded language that appears to mean one thing to the general population but has an additional, different or more specific meaning for a targeted subgroup. The term comes from the idea that a dog whistle can be heard by dogs but is silent to humans. In this case the acting president of The United States of America, send a coded message to alt-right, neo-Confederates, neo-fascists, white nationalists, neo-Nazis, Klansmen, and far-right militias that had his support.

The Danger of False Equivalencies

We must reject the notion that there are "good people on both sides" of a hate rally. It is our responsibility to denounce hate and hold those accountable who promote it.

What is a False Equivalency?
A false equivalency is a logical fallacy in which two things are presented as equal, even though there is no basis for the comparison. It is frequently used to make the actions of hate groups seem less harmful than they are.

Why False Equivalencies are Harmful
False equivalencies undermine the severity of hate and discrimination. They ignore the fact that hate groups seek to harm marginalized communities and promote a culture of hate and violence.

Is this the Republican Party?
